Sega Corporation is a multinational development company that deals in both software and hardware. They also function as a personal computer and console manufacturer headquartered in Japan. Even though the company faced great success with arcades and home consoles, in 2001 they stopped their consumer console business officially so as to concentrate on software development, of which the Sonic games was one of their biggest ventures. In 1940 Sega was established under the name of Standard Games, which later became Service Games in Hawaii, United States. Marty Bromely, James Humpert and Irving Bromberg founded Sega in an attempt to provide American servicemen with coin-operated amusements on army bases and this was to be achieved through different Sonic games. It was Bromeley's idea to shift the headquarters from Hawaii to Tokyo in 1952. Two years later, David Rosen, an American business tycoon moved base to Tokyo in order to set up his own company Rosen Enterprises. When this company imported the coin-operated booths, he realized how popular the coin-operated video game booths had become in Japan. The time was great for business and Rosen Enterprises broadened their business by incorporating the importing of coin-operated electro-mechanically functional game booths. It was only in 1965 that Service Games merged with Rosen Enterprises to give birth to Sega Enterprises. In about a year's time, Sega formulated a game of submarine simulation and called it Periscope, which became an overnight hit all over the world. In the world of video games, Sega has been remembered for introducing games such as Zaxxon - the first game ever to incorporate axonometric projection. Also Hang On happened to be the first ever, full body experience video game in the world and that too was innovated by Sega. In 1982 and 1983, Sega's profits went up to $214. In the following year, Sega was to come out with SG 1000, their first video game console. However in the same year, Sega fell victim to the video game crash. Gradually from that point on, they began to collapse and was soon taken over by other entrepreneurs. In 1984, CSK, which happens to be the multibillion-dollar conglomerate in Japan, bought off Sega and renamed it to Sega Ltd. Thereafter they moved away to America and that is where it currently operates. Around 1991, with Sonic the Hedgehog being launched by Sega, it happened to regain some of its long lost glory that other Sonic games had failed to maintain. However, today Nintendo seems to have regained some terrain in this highly competitive business, and Sega's position as the leader in the industry has been somewhat put aside.
