Distraction can be a good way to cope against negative emotions. Well, as a word of caution, this must only be used as a temporary coping mechanism. It is not to be extensively used too much, and absolutely should never be used to avoid the hurts or negative emotions completely. Negative moods have to be dealt with. However, recreational time must be made in order to have a certain gathering of strength before going back to that psychological work again. Distractions can come in many forms. Therapeutic kinds of art are a good way to distract oneself. These are recreational activities that also provide formation of mind and body. Physical exercise is another distraction. Just remember not to be too hard on yourself, and do not use these distractions as self-punishment techniques. Work can be a good distraction, if the kind of work you are doing is recreational, or at least almost enjoyable. Or maybe at least the work should serve to distract you rather than remind you of the problem. Cleaning the house and organizing files can be quite cathartic in your own way. Maybe, you can also start doing a hobby. Any kind of hobby can serve as a distraction. Learning magic tricks, learning how to sing, dance or perform with a musical instrument, and learning a new language are a few ideas for a hobby. Another is having a garden for meditation. A garden is a good place to meditate or simply to be distracted if you are not in the mood to meditate. But of course the most important aspect of all this is that the distraction should be refreshing. Okay, let take an example. Reading a good book is generally good for you. But if excites the imagination too much to negative emotions, then another book should be read instead. The psychology behind that is doing something like a reading a book can distract you to the point of a hypnogagic state. That state is almost like hypnosis. The feeling is that of being absorbed or drawn into whatever you are doing. So be sure if you would like to read a book to temporarily distract you from your problems, read something light, enlightening and gentle to your heart. Having a sense of humor and laughter are other good distractions. They can add more spice and color to your life in order to confront in anew with greater courage and determination.
