Psychotherapeutic processes are meant to deal with psychological problems, 
ranging from the mild ones like simply a depressed mood, to more subtle ones 
like the controversial problem known as dissociative identity disorder. Thus, 
one aspect of dealing with these kinds of problems is the opening up of one's 
emotions to the therapist.

Denied emotions, things we feel that we do not want to admit, is one of the 
root causes of many psychological and psychiatric problems. In the 
psychotherapeutic setting, this can become quite a huge dilemma since 
communication is a vital for the psychotherapeutic process to work and honest 
communication at that. Needless to say, emotional honesty can be a very 
difficult task for the client or patient.

So for a competent therapist, there should be an abundance of clues for him or 
her to handle. Slips of the tongue, certain points of silence, hesitations and 
pauses, and attempts of changing the subject, are the clues and indicators for 
a competent therapist to notice. He or she will have to create a "mind map" of 
associations to gain a comprehensive picture of the psychological state of the 
client or the patient with regard to his or her unconscious. The unconscious 
can be quite hard to reach. It can be very tricky for the therapist. This 
especially happens if the client or patient has many psychological defense 
mechanisms.

If you are the client, your simple job is to speak, taking note of the meaning 
of what you say. The meaningful points of your speech, especially about your 
emotions or emotional state, can be very enlightening. The therapist of course, 
should even make greater (mental) notes of the meaningful points you have 
established. Assuming he or she is competent enough as a therapist, he or she 
should be able to help you express the feelings in words that are clear and 
understandable.

The therapist can help you be more emotionally honest in many ways. Asking you 
about the physical sensations you feel, and the dreams you are having, are ways 
to reach your unconscious. In this way, you will be taught on how to express 
your feelings in a healthy and productive manner.
You should remember that you cannot control the overall process. Anyway, you 
are not in psychotherapy for a power play. Remember that with a therapist who 
is competent and if he or she is someone you trust, you can gain results.
