Zen meditation and behavioral self management are both practices for learning
and establishing self-control. These are strategies to help one manage one's
self-improvement. Zen meditation is a core practice of the Zen system of
philosophical thought. Postures (such as the lotus position, half-lotus,
Burmese, or seiza postures) are applied to facilitate the meditation practice.
The core of this kind of meditation is focusing on one's counting and
breathing. It also involves being conscious and aware of the passing of one's
thoughts. Of course there are many contexts by which Zen meditation is done.
Group meditation can also be applied.

Zen meditation can be started to with getting a pillow. Then remove socks and
shoes, and use loose clothing. Now then position yourself. Then fold your hands
together. Close your eyes. Think about nothing else but your breathing-in and
out as you exhale and inhale. Feel the flow of the air getting in and out of
your body. Count each inhale and each exhale separately, until the count
reaches ten. Continue doing this for about fifteen minutes. Open your eyes, and
feel the "stillness" of things-be aware of all that is without and within you.

Behavioral self management is a practice that resulted from the psychological
school of the social learning theory. It involves an awareness of having to
change a certain behavior, and to apply certain strategies to bring about this
change. First, you have to choose the behaviors you want to accomplish. Discuss
this with people you trust, and support you. Have a measuring system for the
behavior that you have chosen. Measure the progress and provide feedback from
yourself and from your peers.

Combining both therapeutic techniques (Zen meditation and behavioral self
management) can provide helpful benefits for changing behavior and preventing
illnesses. Using these strategies by alternating each other, or integrating
them as one, is a smart way to accomplish your target behaviors. Applying these
Eastern and Western approaches is a combination of art and science. It can
maximize potential and enrich your experiences for everyday living. For
instance, in anger management, you can use Zen meditation in order to dispel
feelings of anger. Then, you can use behavioral self management in order to
replace angry self-defeating behaviors with more positively productive
behaviors.

Both strategies have been confirmed by research as similarly beneficial in both
rehabilitative and preventive ways. Integrate Zen meditation and behavioral
self management to achieve a whole mind approach to behavioral change.
