I tried Call SP yesterday, Smith WA today (Kossuth Co.), and a few stops
along the way to Spencer and back today as well, but wasn't able to come
up with a single northern migrant warbler, although I did watch a
calling Least Flycatcher forage at Trumble L, Clay Co.
Along the south side of Trumble, in the shrubby low woods, an Alder
Flycatcher sang a few times over a half an hour. In the some area, two
separate Alders were heard calling- whether one was the singer or not I
don't know. I got a good look at one of the calling birds, and to me it
appeared to be a juvenile, as it had strongly buffy wingbars and a pale
yellow belly. There was no sign of the bird being attended by another-
probably on their way down from Minnesota.
Dan Green Slough was kind of sad- a large empty dirt basin with lots of
Killdeer and little else. The lack of Buff-breasted Sandpipers shocked
me. Maybe it'll rain a couple of inches and start the process over again!
The noisy Cooper's Hawk kids are very active right now. I spotted two of
the nest at Call Pk, two of the one at Smith WA, and one from my
neighborhood nest flew over trailing about 30 swallows Sundy while I was
mowing.
