Wonderfully still conditions this morning at Union Slough NWR allowed observation of number of calling Nelson's Sparrows. 13 were found on the south side of the headquarters blacktop (2 of them inside binoc range at 6-8 feet), and another was found along the gravel road a mile to the north. Also at the Slough: FOS Lincoln's Sparrow, Yellow-rumped and Orange-crowned Warbler, and a late Yellow Warbler.

Swainson's Thrushes heard passing over Algona last evening (60 between 10:45 and 11:35) did just that- passed over. Call SP was very quiet during a quick stop on my way home from the Slough, other than a couple of noisy Pileated Woodpeckers.

Mark this location on your maps: there will be Smith's Longspurs NE of the intersection of 120th Ave and 270th St between Algona and Burt next month and again next April.
