A White-throated sparrow, the first of this winter, showed up under our feeder this evening. That is odd, because last winter we had 6 or so daily. Also, the past few days we have had 4 or 5 Red-tailed Hawks in the vicinity, more than in prior years. We have had both a Cooper's and a Sharpie in the past several weeks. The Sharpie (I think) took a Red-bellied Woodpecker from our peanut feeder. My wife got some good pictures of the "kill". If anyone is interested in seeing them, let me know off-line. Also, on Dec. 26th we had our first of the year, single American Tree Sparrow. Unlike in recent years have seen no Fox Sparrows. The only northern finch this winter was one female Purple Finch, which showed up only once a couple of weeks ago. The variety is definitely down at our house. The usual winter residents, however, are abundant. Don Brown
