I stopped by the north side of Hawkeye Wildife Area (Johnson County) for a quick scan of shorebirds on my way home from Tucker's agility trial in Davenport today. Ran into Reid and Pam A. at the DNR parking lot along Amana Road. They quickly showed me an AMERICAN AVOCET they had just located. We also saw a MARBLED GODWIT and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT. A few minutes after the Allens had left to continue home, a WILLET and a couple of YELLOWLEGS joined the small shorebird group. That was pretty much the extent of shorebirds tho. It was quality, not quantity!
Also seen were numerous FRANKLIN'S GULLS and 6 BLACK TERNS.
