On/in/over the flooded field on Yarrow north of Maccoon Access east of
Fairfield. 38 of them gave us a fly over from behind to front at about 50
feet--actually had a roar to it; they are strong, fast flyers. They circled
around a couple of times and then appeared to be leaving the field but came
back, circled a couple more times and lit about 50 yards from us in perfect
view, facing us with the sun behind us. They really are golden, seemed almost
metallic. They stood facing us for as long as we stood there. We finally left
and when we came back by 30 minutes later they had begun to feed. Lifer for all
three of us and perhaps my best birding experience. Thanks to Chris Edwards for
his report from there last spring--we have been keeping an eye on that field
and finally bingo. Don't know how he found it and don't know how the plovers
found it but we are glad they did.
The field also had a female Wilson's Phalarope with her spring bonnet all
aglow, 150 Lesser Yellowlegs with a few Greater Yellowlegs and a handful of
Pectoral Sandpipers mixed in.
Saw three Red-headed Woodpeckers and three Eastern Kingbirds in the area.
A friend saw 50 Bobolinks this morning in the field where I reported seeing 4 a
few days ago on the Fairfield Loop Trail.
