The family and I made a brief stop on the south end of Hawkeye Wildlife Area on
our way back from Mother's Day festivities in NE Iowa.
Babcock Access (the old parking area):
13 Semipalmated Plovers
Killdeer
1 Spotted Sandpiper
1 Lesser Yellowlegs
6 Semipalmated Sandpipers
10 Least Sandpipers
2 Baird's Sandpipers
2 Pectoral Sandpipers
Of note, however, was a single SANDHILL CRANE that called as it took off to the
west upon my arrival to the area.
In the flooded field (yard?) on the north-northwest side of Swan Lake, among
the numerous Yellowlegs was a single WILSON'S PHALAROPE.
Time was running thin by the time we got to the Swan Lake Woods, but a walk
along the entrance road yielded 10 species of warblers, including single
GOLDEN-WINGED, Chestnut-sided (FOY), and Wilson's
