Stuart and I spent the weekend atlasing with Cooper in Des Moines and
Henry Counties. We camped at Geode State Park, where we hiked the lake
trail on Saturday. We heard and got brief glimpses of a singing
CONNECTICUT WARBLER, which flew between several tangles before it
stopped singing and at some point turned into a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
which we got an excellent look at. The Connecticut was gone when we
returned later on Saturday. Other highlights:
Mourning Warbler--heard singing at Geode Lake on the far side of the lake
Ovenbird--pair copulating at Geode Lake
Louisiana Waterthrushes--several singing around Geode Lake
Yellow-throated Warblers--7+ singing around Geode Lake
Scarlet Tanager--pair at Geode Lake
Summer Tanager--several singing
Wood Thrush--Geode Lake
Sedge Wren--block 679 in Henry Co.
Olive-sided Flycatcher--silent bird at Big Hollow Creek Rec. Area, Des
Moines Co.
Bobolink--near Big Hollow Creek in block 687
Bell's Vireos--3 or 4 singing around Big Hollow Creek and the rest of
block 687
Overall, we didn't find a lot of migrants. It's always surprising the
diversity of breeding birds one can find in the breeding bird atlas blocks.
