I spent the weekend birding to and from SE Iowa, including spending half of
Saturday helping with the BBA event in the Red Rock Reservoir area. This is
near the peak time for BBA work and I had many confirmations in the blocks I
worked. Here are the weekend highlights:

10 July
----------
2 Mississippi Kites in Ottumwa
a Barred Owl brood and an Acadian Flycatcher at Yellow Banks P.
a total of 15 Whip-poor-wills in Lee Co. and 3 more in Van Buren Co.
1 Chuck-wills-widow at Croton Unit, Shimek SF
1 Henslow's Sparrow singing at night NW of Ames (only my second ever for Story
Co.)

11 July
----------
4 Hooded Merganser broods and 1 Wilson's Snipe in Washington Co.
2 adult Red-shouldered Hawks with a large fledgling at Croton Unit, Shimek SF
7 White-eyed Vireos at Croton Unit, Shimek SF and 1 in NW Henry Co.
1 N. Mockingbird in SE Jefferson Co.
2 Bewick's Wrens w of Argyle (usual spot)
Pine (1 male), Worm-eating, and Hooded (2 males) warblers at Donnellson Unit,
Shimek SF
Worm-eating, Kentucky, and Cerulean warblers at Croton Unit, Shimek SF
2 Yellow-breasted Chats at Croton Unit, Shimek SF and 1 in NW Henry Co.
1 male Summer Tanager at Fern Cliff Ridge, Washington Co.

I saw a total of 9 species of shorebirds this weekend, so their fall migration
is definitely underway.
