I scouted flooded fields in the Union Slough area this afternoon. It's
not a good sign for farmers when hooded Mergansers are submarining in
their bean fields. At this time, the traditionally best wet spots (or
worst depending on your point of view) are too full of water yet for
many shorebirds, but that's got to start changing. I ran across a
variety of Killdeer, 3 Solitary Sandpipers, perhaps a dozen Least
Sandpipers, and my first Lesser Yellowlegs, Semipalmated Sandpiper,
Pectoral Sandpiper, and Short-billed Dowitcher of the fall season.
