Hi All, Today John Rutenbeck, Chuck Fuller and Jim Fuller birded Des Moines and Lee Counties mostly along the Mississippi River and finished the day with a tally of 69 species. The most ubiquitous bird was the American Robin and there were virtually hundreds seemingly everywhere we traveled. Despite the fact that only limited amounts of water were open, including the Mississippi we saw 17 species of waterfowl, including Cackling Goose, Trumpeter Swan and Hooded Merganser. The best birds were White Pelican, Peregrine Falcon, Killdeer, Wilson's Snipe, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Winter Wren, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Harris' Sparrow, Common Grackle, Purple Finch, and Eurasian Tree Sparrow. The biggest misses were Red-headed Woodpecker, Pine Siskin, Wild Turkey, Pheasant, Yellow-bellied sapsucker, Red-winged Blackbird and Meadowlark. Good Birding, Jim Fuller, Iowa City
