This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. *EAST*: SCOTT COUNTY: A BLACK SCOTER and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER were seen at Pool 14 near the I-80 bridge on the 10th. A GLAUCOUS GULL and a THAYERS GULL were seen above Lock and Dam 15 on the 10 th. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL joined them on the 11th. *SOUTHEAST*: LEE COUNTY: A GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Montrose harbor on the 12th. *CENTRAL:*** * * *DALLAS COUNTY:* *2 COMMON REDPOLLS have been seen at a residence south of Perry on the 9th.* * * *BOONE COUNTY:* *A very late or wintering SAVANNAH SPARROW is still being seen at Harrier Marsh as recently as the 9th. A 2nd bird was seen in the same area on the 10 th. These birds were around as recently as the 12th.* * * * * * * *NORTHWEST:* * * *BUENA VISTA COUNTY:* *A BOHEMIAN WAXWING was seen amongst a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS in a group of Cedar trees on the South River Road in Buena Vista County about a mile and a half from the intersection near Wanata Park on the 9th.* * * *CHEROKEE COUNTY:* *A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen along Barnes Road near its intersection with 468th St on the 9th.* * * *O’ BRIEN COUNTY:* *A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen along a field and road ditch along M12 south of Hartley on the 10th.* * * *KOSSUTH COUNTY:* *A SNOWY OWL was seen perched on a grain bin a mile south of Ledyard, along P50 on the 9th.* * * * * * * * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next scheduled report of the Iowa Rare Bird Alert will be for Friday, January 21, 2011 for the weekly report.
