I drove down to the Louisa Division of Port Louisa NWR late this afternoon
(28 Jan) and went for a short hike along the levee south of the boat ramp.
Many species were observed right along 120th Avenue, but the Division is
currently open to foot traffic. Below is a summary of the species observed:

Eastern bluebird

American tree sparrow

Song sparrow

Dark-eyed junco

Downy woodpecker

Hairy woodpecker

Pileated woodpecker

Red-bellied woodpecker

White-breasted nuthatch

Black-capped chickadee

Bald eagle

Harlan’s (dark morph) red-tailed hawk

Great blue heron – several near the fishing pier

Belted kingfisher – fishing pier

Canada goose

Common merganser – 8 in front of the boat ramp with many more flying along
the river

Several hundred waterfowl - far side of river

There has been a red-shouldered hawk, belted kingfisher, and several great
blue heron hanging out near the fishing pier on the north side of the Louisa
Division for the past two weeks. In fact, I observed the red-shouldered hawk
perched in the same tree on two separate occasions. The refuge manager and I
also observed a Carolina wren and two barred owl on Tuesday (25 Jan).

Good birding…
