I made a trip to Montrose (Lee County) today to see if I could have luck
relocating some of the birds reported there recently.
I never found the 1W Great Black-backed Gull, only Herring Gulls in the
Montrose area. I drove down to Keokuk and back but didn't find it along the
river anywhere, altho it's not easy to check all the available spots along the
road because of lack of parking opportunities. So I could have missed it
somewhere.
On my 3rd stop at the Montrose riverfront park I finally located the
Long-tailed Duck. It was south of the elevator and a scope is definitely
required.
In the small pond just north of the Montrose park (between Montrose and Highway
61) there were 2 American Black Ducks and 4 Gadwall mixed in with the Mallards.
I stopped by the Colusa elevator area and while there is some open water there
were very few ducks there, all Common Goldeneyes.
On the way home, I checked for the resident Great Horned Owl that nests each
year north of the Cone Marsh area and found her on her nest today.
