Today there were six Trumpeter Swans on a frozen patch sheetwater between Rutland and HWY 169. This is smaller than the group of 9 that were present on Monday at the same spot. Sixteen Swans were noted on the T-Swan restoration ponds (IE the Gilmore City sewage treatment lagoons), west of Gilmore City in Pocahontas County (minus the two that I know are DNR clipped birds that leaves 14 free fliers out there). Also a number of roving flocks of dabblers and Canada Geese have been noted throughout the county most of the week. Lastly for today a single Barred Owl was observed at 12:34PM at the past area along the W. Des Moines River on 200th Street between Delaware and Colorado Ave. It was roosting the SE corner of a large, thickly grown grove of conifers.
Much later report than normal but on Tuesday afternoon a group of Canada Geese accompanied by about a half dozen Greater White-fronted Geese were seen on Little Wall Lake, near a patch of opened water on the southeast shore of the lake. Also present were a pair of Ruddy Ducks.
