Iowa birders,

I am a CA birder working my way across the Midwest this week, so forgive me
if these sightings are less than post-worthy; not sure of status in these
parts.

This morning at about 11am on my way to Marshalltown from Mason City I
stopped by Pine Lake State Park in Hardin County. I noticed four young eagles
interacting with one another while flying north over the east shore. When I
got my binoculars on them I could see one had two distinct large white mid-wing
spots and a broad white base to the tail; first winter GOLDEN EAGLE.

Other birds which may have been notable today were 3 SANDHILL CRANES, a
GREAT BLUE HERON, and hundreds of GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE at Otter Creek
Marsh near Tama, a few HOODED MERGANSERS along Otter Creek in Chelsea, and at
least 3 maybe 4 MERLINS chasing House Sparrows in Tama.
