Hello Birders,
I went out for a walk around noon today on Eastland Ave, just east of
Bronson. On my 2 mile work-out, I saw a Loggerhead Shrike, 2 Cooper's
Hawk, 17 Blue-winged Teal, and 1 Wilson's Snipe in the Elliot Creek
valley.
When the clouds lifted and the sun came through, I headed for Winnebago
Bend WMA to look for the "Pileated Woodpeckers" that I suspect are there.
I had no success in finding any, but I did see some more signs that they
have been there and still may be. Even though the woodpeckers were in
short supply, other birds weren't. I saw many flyover Northern Harrier,
Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagles, cormorants, pelicans, and gulls-with 14
Bonaparte's Gulls (foy) being a nice treat.
My time at Winnebago Bend was cut short as the severe storms
approached. I heard thunder and received a weather report from my parents
back home, which let me know it was time to get out. I had to make a hasty
retreat to the truck, which was still in the parking lot about 5-10
minutes away. I took a nice and easy pace back to the truck-that is until
I saw a funnel cloud. Thankfully it didn't form into a tornado (even
though as I type there is a tornado just 10 miles from there). I got out
just in time as the rain began.

Good Birding,
