Hello Birders,
Paul Roisen, Rex Rundquist, and I turned an early morning search for
the Pileated Woodpecker at Winnebago Bend into a full day of birding. The
morning hours went by fast as we tromped all around the woods in search of
the woodpecker, which did not make an appearance for us. We really got
with the program in the afternoon hours, tallying 133 species (without all
of eastern Iowa's warblers) before we called it quits at 9pm. Yellow
Warbler, Dickcissel and Orchard Oriole showed up en masse today.

Among the 14 species of waterfowl, 20 shorebird species, 9 warbler
species, and 13 sparrow species we had the following highlights:

1 Snow Goose at Owego
2 Redhead at New Lake
1 Horned Grebe at New Lake
2 Eared Grebe at New Lake
5 American Bittern at Table Marsh
2 Snowy Egret at Table Marsh
4 Cattle Egret at Sioux Jersey
13 Black-crowned Night-Heron at Table Marsh
1 Osprey near Port Neal (on a nest)
1 Peregrine Falcon at Winnebago Bend
1 Virginia Rail at New Lake
1 Black-bellied Plover at Owego
24 American Golden-Plover at the Tannery & South Sloan BBA Block
61 Hudsonian Godwit at Table Marsh, Sandhill Lake, New Lake
1 Yellow-throated Vireo at Winnebago Bend
2 Swainson's Thrush at Winnebago Bend
1 Blackpoll Warbler at Winnebago Bend
1 Northern Waterthrush at Winnebago Bend
3 Spotted Towhee at Winnebago Bend
2 Great-tailed Grackle at Table Marsh

Good Birding,
