Iowa RBA birds reported from Saturday, June 4, through Friday, June 10, 2011:

This is a handy tool for anyone making a birding trip or otherwise into the state of Iowa. ************************ Species in ALL CAPS can be classified into three categories in the state of Iowa: 1) UNRECORDED, ACCIDENTAL or Casual; 2) A RARE but regular species; or 3) record early or late date or unusual for time of year. Any species with three asterisks (***species***) would represent a first record for Iowa (UNRECORDED) and should be observed and documented very carefully. Species with two asterisks (**species**) are species that are either ACCIDENTAL, CASUAL, or a rare regular species, and should also be documented. Species with one asterisk (*species) should have some details of the observation provided. *EAST*: LINN COUNTY: A VEERY was seen in BBA block 406 on the 6th. JOHNSON COUNTY: A BEWICKS WREN was seen on the Ropp Farm northeast of Kalona on the 10th. Directions: From the cheese factory on highway 1 roughly 4 miles north of Kalona, go east a mile and a half (a mile east of the Stringtown General Store) to the farm on the north side of the road at the crest of a hill where there is a sign "Stringtown Farm Market". This is in the Amish community, and there is no way to telephone ahead. Darrell Ropp, a teenage son and his older brother Merle found the bird, and they would he happy to host you. *SOUTHEAST*: LEE COUNTY: A BLUE GROSBEAK was seen aprrox. 1 mile from the Argyle junkyard east and then south along Belfast Road on the 3rd. WAPELLO COUNTY: A MISSISSIPPI KITE continues to be seen in Ottumwa, and was last seen on the 4th. Directions: From exit 35 on US 63 head into town on Pennsylvania Ave. until you come to Elm. Turn right and the water tower will be very visible. There is a parking lot under the tower and this is a good vantage point. Eventually the Kite should put in an appearance. *SOUTH CENTRAL*: LUCAS COUNTY: A CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW was observed in the Whitebreast Unit of Stephens SF on the 7th. Directions: It was located inside the NE entrance on 127 LN between the second Turkey Habitat Restoration sign and the equestrian campground. *CENTRAL:* * * *JASPER COUNTY:* *A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard at Neal Smith NWR on the 4th.* * * *DALLAS COUNTY:* *2 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were seen at the Brenton Arboretum on the 5th.* * * *POLK COUNTY:* *A HOODED WARBLER was seen at the east northeast edge of BBA block 480 on the 6th.* * * *A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen in a flooded field along NE 110th Ave just west of NE 64th St on the 6th.* * * *NORTHWEST:*** * * *KOSSUTH COUNTY:* *A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen along Hwy 169 approx 7 miles S of Algona at the Anogla Pork hog confinement on the 4th.* * * * * * * * * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The next scheduled report of the Iowa Rare Bird Alert will be for Friday, June 17, 2011 for the weekly report.
