Jason,
Just to add to your question about loons that far south. There is a winter
plumage Common Loon on Burchard Lake in Pawnee County Nebraska (about 20
miles from the Kansas border) right now. Don't know if that is as far north
as it migrated this spring, or if this has occured previously, or.......
Seems unusual. Burchard Lake is not a large reservoir type lake either. I
know this is not 3 juveniles as you have reported, but just thought about it
when I saw your post. Could C. Loons be expanding their range? Or just
coincidence this year? Are there breeding C. Loons in southern Minnesota
today?

Subject: [ia-bird] Pleasant Creek SRA Loons
While working at Pleasant Creek SRA in Linn County this morning, I saw
what appeared to be juvenile Common Loons out on the water. There were as
many as three spread out in different locations on the lake, one of which
was very close to the dam so I got some decent looks. I managed to get a
few very poor photos of them (only had my work camera with me). Has
anyone else seen these? It seems an unusual time of year to be seeing
loons this far south.
