Birders
Our definitive source, Kent and Dinsmore, has this to say about Common Loons
in Iowa in the summer:
"In most summers a few are
      found ... summer birds may
be in either basic or alternate
      plumage, suggesting that
      both nonbreeding adult and
      subadult birds may summer
      in Iowa".
