With a genuine front with 20+ mph NNW due in tomorrow; things should finally
pick up a bit after a terribly slow month. Some Swainson's Hawks should be in
the mix as well. Hard to get a real read on numbers, but I'm guessing 200-300
raptors. In a normal year, this front might have produced a 1,000+ on this
date, but the weather pattern has been relentlessly unfavorable for us (nothing
to channel the birds through the Loess Hills and Missouri River Valley).
Migratory movement has surely been broad front this year-- for us this means
single high birds trickling through. We have been stuck in an 80-120 raptor per
day rut for a while.
