Birders and raptor enthusiasts: keep next Saturday, Oct. 8, open on your calendar for the first-ever “High Trestle Hawkwatch”, 10 AM to 4 PM, at the new High Trestle Trail bridge between Woodward and Madrid. Join the Hawkwatch partners to view migrating raptors from the overlook at the bridge’s west end. For those unable who cannot bike or walk to the site on the trail, a second Hawkwatch site will be found along Highway 210 along the Des Moines River west of Madrid. Hawkwatch team members will be available at both locations with scopes and binoculars, to help visitors spot and identify passing hawks, eagles, vultures and more.
Fall migrating raptors regularly follow the Des Moines River through central Iowa, so this should prove to be a spectacular place to view the south-bound birds. More details will soon be available.
