A couple of questions--is there anyone official that these should be reported to? Karen Viste-Sparkman
In the county in which the mortality occurred, the county naturalist might want to know about it. Otherwise, the IOU is trying to keep track of the magnitude of this irruption, and would like to know of any confirmed sightings, including deceased birds. During the last cyclic irruption, in 2005-2006, there were 19 individuals accounted for in Iowa ( see Iowa Bird Life, Vol. 76, No. 2 ), and already this season there have been 90 sightings, more than four times that previous number.
Ann Johnson has enabled a distribution map of this year's irruption to be displayed at the IOU website ( iabirds.org ), so the public can be kept informed about our progress in understanding what is going on out there. It is usually updated by the end of the day with new confirmed sightings. Second- and third-hand reports usually don't show up until some kind of documentation has been obtained, which can take a few days.
Details of new sightings can be sent directly to myself, or Steve Dinsmore <[email protected]> or the IOU website, or even this listserv.
