Brenda Van Beek photographed a juvenile Snowy Owl this morning 3 mi north and 5
mi west of Sioux Center on County Road B30.

Lena and I did our own search for Snowy Owls and other winter birds north of
Ames today. No luck with owls, but we did find a Vesper Sparrow in NW Franklin
Co., a Northern Shrike in Wright Co., and 10 species of waterfowl at Beemer's
Pond that included 1 Greater White-fronted Goose, 1 adult Tundra Swan, and 127
Trumpeter Swans. I was also surprised to count more than 100 Cackling Geese at
Ada Hayden Park this morning, a remarkable number for January in central Iowa.
