I checked a few areas of open water around Des Moines today: the Copper Creek
lake on University in Pleasant Hill, the Johnston gravel pits, and Polk City
W.A. They held 18 species of waterfowl including Mute and Trumpeter swans,
Bufflehead, and Northern Shovelers at the pits, all 5 Aythya at Polk City, and
Ross's, Snow, and Cackling geese in Pleasant Hill. Also at the Johnston pits
were 10 Great Blue Herons, kingfisher, Killdeer, and the continuing Common
Redpoll flock.
For what its worth, the area where the Snowy Owl was seen on Saturday has been
searched pretty thoroughly without success the last two days.
