Mary Lou Petersen, Jo Ann Whitmore, Pam Allen and I searched for crossbills in
Fairmount Cemetery yesterday. As we were walking in the hemlock/conifer stand
in the lower part, a bird flew up from the ground just 10 feet ahead of us. It
landed in a conifer 10 feet away where we could see it was a female
White-winged Crossbill. Then it flew down to the ground only 15 feet from us
and picked through the cones on the ground. Talk about a good look! It didn't
seem to mind us at all. Mary Lou and Jo Ann earlier saw a female Red Crossbill.
