IA-Birders,
I birded parts of Iowa the past couple of days. Thanks to Rick Hollis, Steve
Dinsmore and especially Jim Fuller for detailed notes and directions on
locating birds.
While looking for the Snowy Owl (no show of course) at the Cedar Rapids airport
I found a flock of Lapland Longspurs just west of the end of the runway.
One redpoll was at the feeders at Kent Park Friday at about 4:15 p.m.
Today (Saturday), I found 3 WW Crossbills at the Fairmount Cemetery right where
Jim said they'd be. Looked like 2 immature males and one female. A couple
from Illinois was there looking for them as well.
Longspurs and Crossbills lifers for me.
Could not pull anything but Herring, Ring-Billed and a couple of Great
Black-backed out of 100's of gulls out of a dozen stop from L&Ds 14, 15 19 and
parts in between. Saw a good variety of ducks. Didn't see any Barrow's,
though wasn't looking for them specifically.
