Hello Birders, I took a trip to the Broken Kettle Grasslands (Plymouth Co) this afternoon to try to locate the notoriously hard to find Black-billed Magpies. My efforts were rewarded with one magpie seen at the intersection of North Ridge Road & Cedar Ave. The bird flew across the road from the east and headed SW from there. Also seen at the grasslands were many Bald Eagles, a Rough-legged Hawk, 80 Rusty Blackbirds, and a Northern Shrike.
A word of warning to those planning on visiting the grasslands-the roads are very slick, with Butcher Road by far being the worst. I made it through alright with my Chevy Impala, but it was not a pleasant experience. North Ridge is ok, but beware of taking Butcher Rd. On another note, I saw 3 Ross's Goose flying over downtown Sioux City at around noon today, along with 18 Snow Goose. Good Birding, Tucker J.
