Waterfowl continue to stream into Winneshiek Co., with 19 species
recorded today, March 11!
At Cardinal Marsh: 400 Greater White-fronted Geese, 300 Snow Geese,
300 Canada Geese, 20 Wood Ducks, 40 Gadwall, 40 American Widgeon, 1500
Mallards, 4 Northern Shovelers, 200 Northern Pintails, 50 Green-winged
Teal, 6 Canvasbacks, 2 Redheads, 60 Ring-necked Ducks, 20 Lesser
Scaup, 8 Hooded Mergansers and 2 Common Mergansers. Also 4 American
Coots and 2 Ring-billed Gulls there.
At Winter's Pond by Bluffton: saw 3 Cackling Geese, 1 Trumpeter Swan
and 2 Blue-winged Teal.
At Horseshoe Marsh by Bluffton: 1 Sandhill Crane and 1 Common Snipe.
Saw 1 Northern Shrike in the Bluffton Area. Bluebirds finally arrived
to join their Robin cousins that returned about a week ago.
The breadth of this spring migration so early in Winneshiek Co. is
unprecedented. The thought of a waterfowl field trip on March 11 to
see anything more than some winter Canada Geese and Mallards in prior
years would have been laughable, but this year my normal trip date in
late March is likely to see little because all the migrating ducks and
geese will have passed through! Waterfowl numbers for our interior
location in the state are also very strong this year compared to many.
Birders in Winneshiek Co. or close should check out Cardinal Marsh
now, as the waterfowl viewing is spectacular.
