Report on the Burrowing Owl. Jean and Chad Eells just emailed me to report seeing the Burrowing Owl again. It was again located on the FIRST culvert on the EAST side of Beemer's Pond. This culvert on on the NORTH side of the road and has fairly fresh rock on it and leads into a tiled field.
Thanks Jean and Chad. Came back around 1:40 and found Steve Dinsmore there. We searched and scanned for about 45 minutes but no luck. I don’t know how far they typically move, it was an individual bird. We’d seen a pair hang around a culvert in Boone County some years back and I suspect because it was a pair they hung around longer. Chad was a member of IOU when he was in high school and learned birding from Charlie and Darlene Ayres from Ottumwa. Small world! I’m going to ask someone to post the directions to the bird list, and also indicate that we did not find it this morning. It was on 240th street west of Webster City, and just at a driveway east of the pond where there are typically lots of wintering swans, locally known as Beemer’s pond. The pond (borrow pit) is at the corner of Stagecoach Road (R-21) and 240th which is at the SE corner of the Highway 20 overpass for the junction of R-21. It was sitting near the east culvert under the driveway and we had a very clear view of it for as long as we wanted to look. I just committed myself to trying for a 300 species year in Iowa (even received my wife's blessing). 300 is a hugh number and I will need as many unexpected birds as possible. A Burrowing Owl is a real rarity anymore in Iowa. Wondering if you would be willing to share the location with me? If I manage a good photo I would provide you with a nice copy.
