Hi All,
I made efficient use of my hour long lunch break to take a walk around Heritage
Park in Ankeny. There wasn't a whole lot of migrant activity present, but I
tallied a whopping 3 warbler species. What I originally thought was the best
was a singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER along the creek towards the south end of
the park boundary. It was loosely associating with a handful of Yellow-rumps as
it foraged. I was unable to relocate this bird when I left. I heard a singing
male CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER when I first arrived in the park, but did not
locate the bird until near the end of my walk. This bird also associating with
a group of Yellow-rumps along the creek. I hadn't thought much of the CSWA
until I checked early dates and saw that this bird was a full 11 days earlier
than the current record early date of April 28th. I still must say that I was a
bit more excited with a migrant Yellow-throated Warbler here, but alas I
digress.
Not much else of note at Heritage. A couple of trees were downed from the flash
flooding last weekend and a lot of the park was either still muddy or sandy or
had standing water.
