Last week I answered one of Steve Dinsmore's posts with a couple of questions and talking about birding up north at my cabin. I was using web mail and it apparently does a reply all and that message got onto the list serve, beside also going to Steve. Actually it was a good thing, since Mike Meetz answered my question about hearing Grouse boom at night. He said he heard them when he was a kid in Northern Wisconsin. Also, I mentioned I was trying to get photos of Flying Squirrels at my feeders at the cabin and I had people inquire about that.
I did get some nice Flying Squirtrel photos. There is a link below (I know this is a bird list serve, but thought everyone might not mind this one time). I had to take these photos between 10-11 PM. I invested in a aluminum shaded work light with a clamp(Walmart $7) and borrowed a spot light bulb from my garage to get enough light to auto focus. I do have a speedlite now that lets me get a higher shutter speed and decent ISO settings. The main tasks is trying to photo these little guys. They are faster than any warbler. They can run up a tree trunk 15 feet and back down several times in what seems to be only a second. My only chance to get photos is when 2-4 come in at once. A single Squirrel never seems to sit still. I think these are Northern Flying Squirrels, not Southern, but the range is real close for both. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Note the photo with ruler by the feeder. These guys are really small. I spent 3.5 hours over 3 nights to get these. FYI - I am no where quick enough to get flight photos yet!
