Kevin Murphy, Corey Lange, and I did a big day yesterday in central Iowa. The
weather was nice, albeit windier than expected, and we tallied 162 species for
the day. Highlights were 18 species of waterfowl (4 geese, Common Goldeneye,
and Common Merganser), a Western Grebe at Saylorville (Sandpiper), 18 species
of shorebirds (1 Am. Avocet at Jester was the best), 22 Common Terns at Jester,
19 warbler species (Golden-winged and Prothonotary were the best), and a female
Summer Tanager at Ledges SP. We missed several herons, did poorly on diurnal
raptors, shorebird numbers and diversity were disappointing, Barred was the
only owl, we missed several expected warblers (e.g., Wilson's), and sparrow
diversity was worse than expected. But overall, it was a great day.
