Shorebird habitat continues to improve as water levels drop on the main marsh. The following shorebirds were found at Cardinal Marsh on May 15: 3 semipalmated plovers, 10 killdeer, 10 lesser yellowlegs, 12 solitary sandpipers, 8 least sandpipers, 1 pectoral sandpiper, 1 stilt sandpiper and 7 short-billed dowitchers. In addition, there were 12 sandhill cranes. 9 were singles in a scattered flock and there was a parental pair with a quail-sized colt. A lone trumpeter swan kept company with a hundred or so Canada geese. Several shovelers and a pintail were present. Upland birds of note included yellow-headed blackbirds and an orchard oriole as a wood thrush serenaded the marsh.
