They were just as loud last year. They woke me up at 4:30; so I just got up &
enjoyed their calling in the early light.Carl Nollens.e. Polk County

Subject: [ia-bird] Whip-poor-wills in Loess Hills
To: [email protected]

I attended the Loess Hills Prairie Seminar this weekend, and heard the most
Whip-poor-wills calling I think I've ever experienced (and the first I've heard
in several years). It was hard to tell exactly how many were calling because
they were all making so much noise, but I think there were at least 3 or 4 in
the area surrounding the campground.

It was wonderful to hear them, but they sure didn't make it easy to go to
sleep!

They were located in the Loess Hills Wildlife Area in Monona County near the
intersection of 178th St. and Oak Ave. (NE of Onawa, NW of Castana).
