I saw a black & white warbler, I think, a male) in my yard / ravine -
River Heights n. of Iowa City Sept 1. I used two books to help confirm
it, but I'm not your expert. I thought I had seen one a few weeks ago, but
not sure. This time I was outside while it jumped around a big tree trunk,
from limb to limb, and I was within 8 feet of it for a few minutes. I've
hesitated to report it, since I am just a learner. But decided to take a
chance.
Books I looked at: Petersons 1980 Field Guide to Birds East of the
Rockies, pp 232-233; Sibley's Guide to Birds, 2000 (2001), p446; Robbins,
Brunn, & Zim 1966, A Guide to Field Identification: Birds of North
America, pp 251-253; & Smithsonian's Field Guide to Birds of North
America, pg 398. the same day, still sitting at my computer where I look
out to the back and side of the house into my slightly woodsy ravine, I
saw what appeared to be a Cooper's Hawk swoop past, then land on a limb
where I observed him several minutes. He was grayish, more like an adult
than juvenile, had the 3 dark bands on the tail that ended with rounded
white tips; had a smallish head that he lifted/twisted occasionally,
exposing more of his faintly rust-colored front bib (see pg 121 of
Smithsonian's Field Guide to Birds of North America. I see a lot of other
birds that are more familiar to me.
