Our current alpha female not only threatens the other hummers but had me back up with my long lens to an acceptable distance on the back porch. It is a surprise to look over the camera to see a very angry little bird ready to take on the end of a lens. Too bad the close focusing distance for that lens is about 8 feet. She is on our blog.

I have never been able to verify more than three at a time. But I can count on seeing two in any five minute period. In urban Des Moines, five feeders, trumpet vines, climbing honey suckle (which did not do well this year), and assorted smaller nectar varieties. I lost a lot of perennials to the heat and drought this year.
