Hi I-Birders,
In our back yard with large oaks on the edge of a large wooded lot, I
have watched squirrels operate with impugnity for years. This afternoon I was
on the phone and heard a shrieky-squeaky noise in the yard. Moving to the
window, I saw a raptor on the ground, taking flight into the woods with a
hapless squirrel wriggling in its talons. My view was brief and from behind,
but from its shape, plumage, and tail pattern I think it was likely a
Broad-winged Hawk. Five minutes later the squirrels were frolicking once again
as if nothing had happened. Cold, dispassionate nature.
