Afternoon sessions at the event will focus on landscape issues. Featured Speaker Lisa Schulte-Moore is an associate professor of natural resource ecology and management at Iowa State University. Her talk will focus on how Iowans could tweak, adapt, or transform the corn belt landscape to maintain its economic productivity while also achieving better environmental performance. And a panel of Iowans will talk about the promise of the growing soil health movement in which farmers, nonprofits, and agencies are focused on more directly connecting soil health to the long-term economic and environmental performance of Iowa agriculture. Scheduled to speak are: · Mark Rasmussen became director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture on June 1, 2012. He previously served as a research microbiologist at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Vetrinary Medicine in Laurel, Maryland. · J. Kelly Tobin is a southwest Iowa farmer and member of the Iowa State Soil Conservation Committee, which oversees the Division of Soil Conservation at the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Tobin has successfully utilized conservation strategies like conservation tillage and cover crops on his farm to reduce soil erosion and keep area waters clean. · Jerry Hatfield is director of the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, a U.S. Department of Agriculture research center located in Ames, Iowa. In the morning, keynote speaker L. Hunter Lovins will discuss how focusing on natural resource conservation is a good business strategy. And other great speakers are on the agenda, too.
