For those with an interest in Red Crossbills, the link below might be worth a 
look. In particular, note the comments on the 2012 eruption and the presence of 
Type 3 birds from the Pacific Northwest east to eastern New York! The summer 
reports from Iowa were almost certainly part of this movement. Anyway, it is a 
fun read and a good resource.
