Greg and I did a little birding in Dickinson County Tuesday (sunny, calm and
70's!). Our big surprise was locating MORE THAN 100 wood ducks about 10:30 AM
at the East Okoboji Slough. The NW pond was covered with wood ducks and it
seemed every fallen tree had a line of wood ducks showing off in the sunshine.
We simply soaked in the view and were amazed at their numbers.
We also found a flock of Cedar Waxwings busy enjoying the berries from a hedge
of bushes at Elinor Bedell State Park. Yellow rumped warblers were plentiful
and an osprey flew over East Okoboji, too.
Other sightings in Dickinson County included numerous chickadees, WB
nuthatches, pelicans, cormorants, GB herons and coots. We were surprised to see
robins in town and meadowlarks along a gravel road.
The weather was an absolute gift Tuesday and the birds made it memorable!
Rejoicing, Sue
