A neighbor reported seeing five quail on our land a few days ago, in a
first-year prairie planting. He said he was certain they were quail, partly
because they were smaller than partridges. We heard quail calling here
fairly frequently from 1988 through the early 1990s, but the last time I heard
one calling was several years ago. Our land is about a mile southeast of
Ames.

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by
staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open
air."
