Yes, I know there are pockets of wintering Red-headed Woodpeckers throughout
the state but the one at my suet just now raised an interesting question.
At least one pair regularly nests in my yard or the immediate vicinity but
those have been gone since September.  So what's up with one on December
4th?  Is it a lone bird moving further south?  Is this guy wintering nearby
and just decided to explore further today?  One would think that if it was a
resident bird it would have been visiting the feeders all fall.  Ah, the
mysteries of feeder watching!
