Scouting for tomorrows bird count, I saw 7 species of ducks and 3 species
of Geese. If this pattern holds for tomorrow, I beleive it would be a
record number of waterfowl for the Ida County count. The best birds were
my second ever record of American Black Duck for Ida County. Others
included Red-breasted Merganser, Greater-white Fronted and Cackling Goose.
There was also a Ring-billed Gull at Crawford Creek. The best birds
however were 4-5 Short-eared Owls in a dense thicket adjacent to several
hundred acres of grassland on the west side of Crawford lake.

Good birding
