This week, Pat Dunn, and later I, checked the Blood Run State Nature Area
feeders. For the first time, the large feeder was empty, so I filled it. They
were busy with many Pine Siskins, and about eight other species feeding. If you
check the feeders, let us, (SFBC), know the species you are seeing, as we are
keeping a record.
This is indeed the year for Siskins. I had a record 51 at the Sioux Falls
feeders Wednesday. That is compared with none last December. The two Redpolls
did not show up again (at least when I was watching).
Let us have a Christmas Bird Event, as some birding groups do. That means you
post on any of your birding list-servs, the best bird (for whatever reason,
such as the first bird of Christmas morning, or greatest number of a species at
one time for the day) at only one location, such as your yard, farm, etc. It
would be great if you also added a photo of the bird to the photo page of one
or more of the list-servs. If you have younger children or grandchildren home
for Christmas, perhaps they could help you select the Christmas Bird. It is
something they might remember for a long time, or even want to do as a
Christmas tradition.
Of course, folks will be posting their last bird of 2012 and first of 2013.
(For those souls who thought the world would be ended by now, you are forgiven
and now can resume birding).
