The waterfowl in SW Des Moines have been scattered about the open water
areas until recently. With Raccoon River Park and Hallett pits freezing up,
the word must be out that Maffitt Reservoir is the place to be! This
morning I had 17 waterfowl species at Maffitt:

Greater White-fronted Goose- 4
Cackling Goose- 122
Canada Goose- 2360
Trumpeter Swan- 27
Gadwall- 14
American Black Duck- 2
Mallard- 1350
Northern Shoveler- 1
Northern Pintail- 4
Green-winged Teal- 3
Canvasback- 23
Redhead- 2

Ring-necked Duck- 26
Lesser Scaup- 86
Common Goldeneye- 185
Hooded Merganser- 23
Common Merganser- 40
American Coot- 39

Good birding...
